The untouchables. The fracas between Yoruba and Hausa- Fulani

The untouchables

THE UNTOUCHABLES.
.
The fracas between Yoruba and Hausa- Fulani traders in the legendary city of Ile-Ife has demonstrated serious distinctions among the peoples of Nigeria. It has doubtlessly shown that in today’s Nigeria we have the Dispensables and the Untouchables. The Dispensables are those whose most venial and petty misdeed is quickly given grave criminal appellation and rigorously punished. The Untouchables are safe from the rigours of the criminal law. Because of their friendship and familial intimacy with the state, they may commit the most gravely regarded crime in our code and still trot out with arrogant impunity. The Untouchables are more equal than their fellow countrymen.
.
The Yorubas did not strike the first blow in that tragic misunderstanding. The Hausa-Fulani were the first to implement the first barbarity and left a Yoruba man insensible and almost lifeless. Not content to stop there, they swore hell and brimstone and postured to assail any Yoruba man that dared to approach. An upsurge of indignation swept the Yoruba traders into action leading to the outburst of a bloody free for all. Causalities were counted from both sides of the fray. The Hausa-Fulani parted with more men as they were outnumbered and understandably overpowered.
.
Unlike what commonly obtains in the north whenever there is feeding frenzy against people of other ethnicities, the intervention of security operatives was to time and prompt. This staved off a bloodier fueling of the violence. Considerable calmness was restored as displaced Hausa people were harmlessly conducted to their port of departure.
Astonishingly, for the first time since Nigeria recently became a hot bed for violent killings, we have witnessed our security operatives living up to expectations. The searchlight of investigation had been unhesitatingly beamed into the Ife crisis, the suspects fretted out and apprehended. Those paraded and being prepared for prosecution so far are only from the Yoruba side of the conflict. Nevertheless, this would have attracted commendation if this same measure was applied in other cases with similar colouring.
.
The first extreme demonstration of human wickedness by Fulani herders was at Agatu. A tragic surprise fell upon the peace-cherishing people of Agatu in Benue state. Their attackers caught them unawares and unmercifully mowed them down. Nursing mothers, infants and suckings were in the slaughter list. They were murdered and gruesomely dismembered.
.
Interestingly, those who executed that monstrosity at Agatu did not flee after carring out the carnage. In the attitude of victorious warriors, they settled and pillaged the town in the spirit of triumph and conquest. The Nigerian army did nothing. The Nigerian police turned a blind eye. They were allowed just enough time to celebrate and noisily gloat over their martial victory. Months after that black genocide claimed the heads of about 500 innocents nobody has been arrested in connection with it. In fact, the perpetrators have gone back to slaughter more and more.
.
Seeing the kid glove with which the FG and our security operatives handled Agatu, the bloodsucking herders got reinforcement and pressed into Uzo Uwani in Enugu state. Fearlessly, they pre-informed the community of their coming. The said community did not slumber on that red alert. They imparted that piece of alarming intelligence to the necessary quarters. No single police officer was deployed to Uzo Uwani to wade off the murderous invaders. They had a smooth sail into the community despite being encumbered with heavy loads of sophisticated arms and ammunition. The unfortunate inhabitants of that farming settlement were reduced to an insignificant number. As usual no arrest was made. The senior police officer who either out of malice or criminal negligence shirked his duty and caused the death of many was not even dismissed. He was punished with redeployment!
.
An unlucky Igbo woman was tagged a blasphemer in Kano, trounced pitilessly and beheaded. Those arrested in her case were unconditionally freed by the Attorney General of Kano state. This still worries my imagination till today.
.
Since the relentless and bloodsoacked jihad in southern kaduna began, more than 5,000 innocents have been killed and 10, 000 others compelled to flee their villages by armed vandals. Arsonists have burnt down churches, homes and practically turned villages into wasteland. No spirited effort has yet been made by both the state and federal governments to bring the wreckers to book even as Mallam Nasir El Rufai has indisputable knowledge of who the vandals are . No human being can exhaust all the examples that are there to be given….
.
Why the prompt response to Ife crisis then? When did we began to concern ourselves with the relevance of human life ? Are there people in this country with more precious and valuable blood navigating their veins? Do we have Untouchables here? I smell a rat!
