POLICE TO INVESTIGATE FIRE INCIDENT IN ANAMBRA INEC OFFICE

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mustapha Dandaura, has ordered full scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the destruction of card readers and other materials by fire at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, in Awka, Anambra State.

Dandaura, who visited the scene barely an hour after the incident along with heads of other security agencies for on the spot assessment, expressed shock how fire got into a steel container and consume several hundreds of card readers meant for different polling units in Anambra. He described the development as a sabotage which will not be tolerated.

Recall that on Tuesday, February 12, at about 2:10pm, a steel container inside the premises of INEC headquarters, Awka, containing card readers meant for the 2019 general elections in Anambra was consumed by fire.

The area was immediately cordoned off by armed policemen deployed to the complex and Fire Service Department was also contacted to put off the fire.

Reliable source from INEC informed StateReporters News that the main INEC building was not affected by the fire, and that there was no lost of life; adding that the extent of damage done by the fire cannot be quantified immediately.
